If you've driven down Shipyard Drive more than a few times since last fall, you've probably clocked the same construction wrap on the old Boathouse Bistro building. Neighbors ask about it in the Hingham Facebook groups every few weeks. Is Salty Days open yet? Did anyone see workers inside? The answer, as of this summer, is still no. And that's the strange part, because almost everything else announced alongside it has already come and gone through its own opening weekend without a hitch.
Hingham doesn't have one commercial strip. It has three, each with its own owner, its own pace, and its own idea of what "opening soon" actually means. Watch all three at once this year and a pattern shows up that a single storefront never would have revealed: the business everyone in town has been waiting longest for, the one built on local roots and hometown nostalgia, is the one that has taken the longest to actually show up.
Derby Street Is Running on a National Retailer's Clock
Derby Street Shops has spent the past year adding names that South Shore shoppers already recognize from elsewhere. Aritzia, the Canadian fashion label known for its clean, elevated basics, and Johnnie-O, the California coastal-lifestyle brand, were both announced as new arrivals for 2026, going up under "Coming Soon" signage. Union Square Donuts, the Somerville bakery with locations from Brookline to Lynnfield, confirmed plans for its ninth location at 94 Derby Street, aiming for sometime this summer.
None of these three had a hard date attached as of this spring's reporting, which is fairly typical for national retailers slotting into an existing shopping center. Derby Street already has the electrical, plumbing, and lease infrastructure worked out across more than 60 storefronts. A new tenant moving in is mostly an interior build-out inside a shell the property has done dozens of times before. Whatever the exact week Union Square Donuts finally cuts the ribbon, the process of getting there has been unremarkable, which is exactly the point.
The center also kept its community programming running without interruption. Summer Thursdays, the weekly caregiver-and-kids series with live music, storytime, and yoga on the Green, returned again this year with proceeds from children's tickets benefiting The Arc of the South Shore and Cardinal Cushing Centers. New tenants can take their time. The stuff that happens outside, on the lawn, keeps its own schedule regardless.
The Shipyard Announced Three Things Together. Only One Slipped.
Go back to May 2025 and you'll find a single press release announcing three new arrivals at The Launch at Hingham Shipyard all in one breath: J.Crew Factory, timed for back-to-school; Kids Empire, an almost 10,000-square-foot indoor play center marking the brand's first Massachusetts location; and Salty Days Fish Co., the Cohasset seafood favorite that started as a tiny Hingham fish market back in 2020, coming home to take over the old Boathouse Bistro space at 19 Shipyard Drive. Boathouse Bistro itself wasn't disappearing. It was relocating to Nantasket Beach Resort in Hull.
Two of those three showed up when they said they would. J.Crew Factory opened in the promised back-to-school window. Kids Empire followed without any reported delay. The Shipyard's Friday night concert series, now well past its first decade, kept its own rhythm too, opening its 2026 run on July 10 with a lineup of tribute acts and carrying straight through into early September at the amphitheater behind 18 Shipyard Drive, on schedule, same as every summer before it.
Salty Days is the outlier. The original announcement promised a grand opening in fall 2025.

By February 2026, coverage of the company's separate Marshfield expansion mentioned, almost as an aside, that the Hingham Shipyard location was now slated to open in late 2026. That's not a delay measured in weeks. That's a full year past the original date, and as of this writing the storefront still hasn't opened.
Why the Restaurant Was Always Going to Be the Slow One
Line up what each business actually required and the gap stops looking like bad luck and starts looking like math. J.Crew Factory moved into a retail box it has built out dozens of times across the country. Kids Empire's climbing structures and turf areas are modular by design, meant to drop into a shell space quickly. A full-service restaurant with a full bar, an expanded outdoor patio, and a kitchen built from scratch is a different kind of project entirely. It touches plumbing, ventilation, fire suppression, and liquor licensing, all inside a waterfront building that used to house a completely different concept. None of that moves at retail speed.
It also explains something about downtown that looks similar on paper but is playing out on an even longer runway. In June 2026, local investor and Hingham resident Jeff Greenman acquired the former Hingham Furniture & Design space at 44 North Street, a 3,000-square-foot property downtown, with plans for an as-yet-unnamed upscale restaurant. Furniture & Design didn't close. It relocated to a nearby Cohasset space and continues operating there as an interior design studio, furniture retailer, and custom framing shop. But the new restaurant has no name, no confirmed menu, and no firm date. The town's own read on the timeline was that it could open "in the coming years," full stop.
Compare that with what's happening a few miles away. Nobody promised Aritzia or the North Street restaurant a specific season. Salty Days did, publicly, more than once, and the promise is the reason people keep asking about it.

If you're wondering when Salty Days finally reopens, the most recent word puts it at late 2026, a year later than the town was first told, and the reason has more to do with the size of the build-out than anything going wrong. What this tells a longtime resident is worth remembering the next time a press release lands with a confident season attached. National retailers slotting into existing shells tend to hit their dates. Community programming that doesn't require construction permits tends to hit its dates too. A single full-service restaurant rebuilding a waterfront space from the studs out rarely does, no matter how much local goodwill is riding on it.
Hingham's commercial map is being redrawn in three places simultaneously this year, at three different speeds, for reasons that have nothing to do with which business the town wanted back the most.
